Cancer-related Neuropathies

Abstract

|
Peripheral neuropathies are the most common neurologic complications of cancer. The spectrum of peripheral nervous system dysfunction in cancer patients is broad; direct nerve compression or infiltration by tumor; neurotoxicity of cancer treatment; nutritional deficiencies; metabolic derangement; and paraneoplastic disorders. Among them, paraneoplastic neuropathies are important because, they may have unique phenotypic presentations, such as sensory neuronopathy, autonomic neuropathy, demyelinating neuropathy, and rarely motor neuron disease. Immunomodulatory therapy, such as corticosteroid, IV immunoglobulin, or immunosuppressants, may benefit some cancer patients with peripheral neuropathies.
